Whitefield Primary School has been a National Reading Recovery Award winning school for the last three years.
Reading Recovery is a bespoke one to one Literacy programme delivered by specially trained and highly skilled teachers. The programme can last between twelve and twenty weeks. Children who have been assessed as attaining below age related expectations at the end of the Foundation Stage are assessed and analysed by the Reading Recovery teachers using an in-depth assessment tool. Those children with the lowest scores are selected to receive the programme. Children may receive the programme in Year 1 or 2, and they will make accelerated progress in reading helping them to access the whole curriculum.
Children receiving Reading Recovery need to have a low absence rate as it is an intensive daily programme and no sessions should be missed.
The selected children receive a 30 minute session daily. During this session the teacher sets reading and writing tasks, monitoring progress throughout and intervening instantly to support the child to make appropriate progress. At the end of the programme children are expected to achieve or exceed age related expectations.
